Trainee Patent Attorney (Biotech) at GSK Vaccines

GSK Vaccines is seeking a trainee patent attorney to join our Global Patents team located in Siena, Italy. Candidates must have a strong first degree in Biotechnology/Biochemistry/Biology or a related subject, with Immunology knowledge being an advantage, and some research or industrial experience being preferable. You must be passionate about science and medical innovation.

We will consider new entrants to the profession and also part-qualified trainees (i.e. 1-3 years relevant experience in a patent trainee role in private practice or industry).

Applicants must be able to demonstrate their interest in joining the patent profession and commitment to training for qualification as a European patent attorney.

We are looking for a team player with strong interpersonal, negotiating, analytical and problem-solving skills, and excellent attention to detail.

Fluency in written and spoken English is essential, and fluency in Italian is also desirable.

As a trainee patent attorney you will work on a range of vaccine-related technologies and assets, from discovery-stage through to commercial products, and across a variety of disease areas. Our investment in training, development and learning opportunities will empower you to be the best you can be, and we will make sure you have a stimulating and diverse role in a supportive environment  that will enable you to develop your expertise as you work towards full qualification as a European patent attorney.

The role will be based primarily at our R&D site in Siena, Italy, but will also involve some international travel, including to other GSK sites in Europe and the US, from time to time. Support with re-location is available to the selected candidate.

The role involves providing proactive support to R&D and creating value for GSK by working collaboratively with scientists and senior managers on projects including filing and prosecuting patent applications, freedom to operate (FTO) analyses, challenging 3rd party patents and defending GSK patents (via European Patent Oppositions and Appeals, and worldwide litigation), due diligences and supporting business transactions (e.g. in-licensing and collaborations). Our Global Patents Group is a large and diverse team of European and US patent attorneys, who will provide you with support, guidance, structured legal training and invaluable commercial exposure throughout your training.

At GSK we provide a supportive working environment, and a range of development opportunities. We also offer competitive benefits and compensation packages designed to attract and to retain the very best. GSK is proud to promote an open culture, encouraging people to be themselves and giving their ideas a chance to flourish. GSK is an equal opportunity employer.
