The role
Working with both our Munich and London teams, your role will be to both draft, file and prosecute patent applications in Germany and Europe as well as trade mark and designs protection work.
You will be supported by partners and attorneys in both offices and will be helped with any business development and marketing needs. Our support also includes excellent IT infrastructure and an industry-leading Records Management system, staffed by expert teams of people with long sector experience.
Key responsibilities
- Supporting clients in protecting their inventions and maximising commercial potential, managing the full journey from concept to granted patent for a range of domestic and international companies - giving you a broad spectrum of interesting work:
- Drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in Germany and Europe
- Instructing foreign attorneys on matters requiring local expertise in foreign jurisdictions
- Representing clients in patent oral proceedings and opposition hearings
- Providing legal opinions on validity, infringement, and freedom-to-operate issues
- Advising on all aspects of selecting, registering and protecting trade marks and designs:
- Drafting, filing and prosecuting trade mark and design applications
- Conducting trade mark searches
- Managing contentious issues including opposition and cancellation actions, infringement and anti-counterfeiting issues
- Implementing brand protection strategies, clearing and registering trade marks in the EU, challenging third parties that come too close (in terms of both use and registration), negotiating settlement
- Providing strategic IP portfolio management and advice both nationally and internationally
- Advising and representing clients in intellectual property matters before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office (DPMA), European Patent Office (EPO), European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and other relevant authorities.
- Working collaboratively with the Munich and London teams to:
- Provide a high quality, cost effective, responsive service to clients
- Enable and actively create growth by developing business from new and existing clients
- Guide and support junior team members in their growth
Who we’re looking for
- A qualified German and European Patent and Trademark Attorney with 3+ years PQE who is eager to grow within an international environment. These candidates will work under direct supervision of our partners and attorneys in Munich and London.
- Extensive experience and technical mastery in patents, trade marks and designs
- Able to represent clients before the EPO, DPMA and EUIPO
- A science degree, with sufficiently broad knowledge to provide patent services across a range of scientific fields including Chemistry and Life Sciences
- A motivated individual with the vision and ambition to grow into a senior leadership role with potential for ownership
- High standard of written and spoken German and English
- Business development skills
- Highly effective organisational and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as working on own
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to quickly build strong professional relationships internally and externally
- Proactive, adaptable, flexible and tenacious
